Last year, Kim Kardashian made headlines when her mobile app, Kim Kardashian: Hollywood, broke records and became one of the highest-grossing apps on both the iTunes App Store and Google Play. The app put players in control of an aspiring celebrity who crosses paths with Kim, who helps them on their way to reaching A-list status. Despite being a free-to-play app, it made money through micro-transactions and in-app purchases as people bought items to help dress their celebrities up. The game proved to be rather compelling, and through a dedicated team that constantly churns out content, it has persisted to this day and has even introduced Apple Watch integration.
And now, following her app’s unprecedented success, it seems the rest of the Kardashians are following Kim’s lead, as the family has just released a line of mobile apps to cater to their fans. However, they are nothing like Kim Kardashian: Hollywood. While the developers of Spin Genie have said that over 50% of all smartphone app activity is still done through gaming, the Kardashians have gone down a different path, offering instead an all-access pass to their lives through their range of apps.
Launching in the morning of September 14, the Kardashian apps were free to download, but required a $2.99 monthly subscription fee. In exchange, users of the app were given access to the juiciest aspects of their daily lives, from workout tips to makeup tips, and even some live streaming Q&As for paid subscribers. According to the Hollywood Reporter, the apps lured a million subscribers in a week, with Kylie Jenner’s app garnering the most downloads, launching to the top of the US’s Most Downloaded Free App ranking for two days.
Of course, reviews of the apps have been mixed. As compiled by ET Online, many have said that getting access to their favorite stars’ styling guides and makeup tutorials was a blessing, while others have wondered what point there even is to releasing these apps, as most information on the Kardashians can now be found online. Of course, for fans and followers of the iconic family, a central hub for all things related to their favorite Kardashian is nothing short of a blessing.
